The rock house that Hezekiah Alexander built in 1774 stands as a symbol of our community’s perseverance and endurance. Through many crises – from wars and economic depressions to pandemics – generations of Charlotteans have saved the historic home. In these extraordinary times, we find hope knowing that champions like you will ensure the future of Charlotte’s history.
As a measure of that trust, the Weatherspoon Family Foundation will contribute up to $75,000 to the Charlotte Museum of History as a challenge grant. Through June 30 the foundation will match donations up to that amount – so your gift can go twice as far.
The campaign will support the museum’s ongoing efforts to preserve and share Mecklenburg’s cultural heritage, in the face of a projected $150,000 loss of earned income due to temporary closure during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even though our doors are closed, the Museum continues to protect and maintain the 1774 Alexander Rock House and homesite, as well as our exhibits and artifacts. We’ve also launched a series of free Museum at Home digital opportunities to support K-12 education and provide the community with vital historical context for this pandemic. Contributions to this special campaign will allow us to continue supporting our community in this way. Thank you for standing up for your history museum.
Because we are a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, your donation is tax deductible to the extent of the law.
To donate by check, please make your check payable to The Charlotte Museum of History and mail to:

Each week that you help us reach our fundraising goal ($8,333/week), you’ll see this graphic of the 1774 Alexander Rock House being “raised” – stone by stone. We will also celebrate campaign milestones by releasing new virtual tours of the homesite for free to the public. Your gift will directly support the ongoing preservation and interpretation of Charlotte’s unique cultural heritage, including Mecklenburg’s oldest home. With your support, we will continue to enrich the community through shared understanding of the past and inspiring dialogue about the future. Thank you!
