The date May 20, 1775 appears all across North Carolina, from our state flag to our "first in freedom" license plates. But why has May 20 become such a powerful symbol of Charlotte?
This exhibit will explore the origins of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, its presence as a symbol throughout history, and its value to the region 250 years later. Through an interactive diorama of Charlotte in 1775, original documents and artifacts from the Revolutionary Period, and memorabilia from past celebrations, visitors will come away with a fuller understanding of what the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence means to the Queen City.
