The Charlotte Museum of History is a local history institution in East Charlotte with a mission to save and share the history of the Queen City. We manage and interpret the 1774 Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, including the Rock House (the oldest standing home in the city), external kitchen, and springhouse. In addition, we operate a large museum with four main exhibition galleries, a collections room, and an events space.

This internship is designed for an upper-level history major who is passionate about historic preservation. The Charlotte Museum of History recently re-started our collections intake process, and this intern will help us to catalogue and research new objects, organize our collections, promote our collections to the public, and identify areas for improvement in our collections policy.

Essential Duties:

  • Help process, organize, and inventory collections inside the Charlotte Museum of History collections room (including photography, basic descriptions, and logging into PastPerfect)
  • Research featured collections items and create descriptions for publication on the museum website
  • Assist in the development of new exhibits in the museum using objects from the collections
  • Create collections guides and other aids for public use
  • Communicate with education staff to identify new objects for the collections

Preferred Background and Qualifications:

  • Candidates should be at least juniors with a major in history, historic preservation, journalism, communications, or a related field
  • Candidates should want to pursue a career in public history or historic preservation
  • Candidates should be familiar with Charlotte’s history and/or have excellent historical research skills
  • Knowledge of PastPerfect (or other collections management systems) is highly preferred
  • Candidate should have good writing skills and be able to write for a public audience
