A Celebration of Midcentury + Modern Architecture

“The Mad About Modern home tour has opened the door to a curated selection of midcentury and modern homes in Charlotte for more than 14 years now,” said Charlotte Museum of History President & CEO Terri White. “While this is the museum’s final year hosting Mad About Modern, we look forward to bringing the city other tours of historical architectural in the future.”

The Mad About Modern tour celebrates the bold design and architectural innovation that define midcentury and modern buildings. As these properties reach the 50-year mark and become eligible for historic landmark designation, the tour shines a spotlight on the importance of preserving Charlotte’s midcentury modern architectural heritage.

Whether you're an architecture aficionado or you just love a peek behind the doors of fabulous homes, Mad About Modern offers the chance to experience some of Charlotte’s most unique residences. The tour includes a special kickoff event on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Charlotte Museum of History featuring “Mr. Modernist” George Smart. Smart is a leading authority on the preservation of historic modernist design and founder of USModernist, a non-profit that hosts the largest open digital archive of midcentury modernist houses in the world.

This year’s tour features three stops, including one midcentury modern home, plus two modern homes inspired by the midmod movement. To set the mood, the museum is bringing classic cars to the tour again this year. Look for them at each tour home.

All tour proceeds support the Charlotte Museum of History’s mission of saving and sharing Charlotte’s history.
